All About Vision Therapy

What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy allows an individual to improve organization and integration of their visual information processing systems and to train vision to become a more dominant processing system. Activities are planned to enhance the body's awareness and control, self-monitoring, self-correction, self-direction, laterality, directionality, rhythm and timing, form perception, and visualization. Hindrances to learning and achievement are reduced or removed, which, in turn, reduces stress and builds self confidence. The end result is the ability to perform with increased efficiency and reduced effort and to achieve greater use of one’s potential.

Who can benefit?

Vision therapy can be effective for people of all ages.  Whether you've dealt with a vision issue since childhood like amblyopia or convergence insufficiency,  or have encountered problems due to a concussion, traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other neurological events, we've achieved great success with patients of all ages.

Many patients mistakenly believe they're too old to correct their vision and feel they've missed their opportunity. However, they may not be aware that the brain remains adaptable (neuroplasticity) throughout life. It's important to understand that vision therapy can be equally effective for adults as it is for children.

What to expect?

Before starting Vision Therapy, you or your child will have a Binocular Vision Evaluation with one of our doctors to diagnose any visual issues. After the evaluation, if Vision Therapy is necessary, a personalized treatment plan will be discussed during a Consultation Appointment. Therapy sessions are usually scheduled weekly and last 45 minutes per session. Home-support activities may be recommended to improve outcomes.  The success of the treatment program relies heavily on patient dedication and adherence. It's essential to follow the prescribed treatment plan diligently, including dedicating the recommended amount of time and conscientiously performing home therapy activities as instructed.
